Utopis-Labs 1, 2, and 3 are three identical mobile research platforms detached from the main Utopis spaceship upon its arrival in the Ares system. Each is a ~400‑meter‑diameter, ~150‑meter‑long habitat ring that maintains 0.9 g artificial gravity via 2 RPM rotation. Independently propelled, the labs conduct specialized exploration across Ares’ moons and planets, functioning as remote extensions of the New Eden colony. Though identical in design, each lab has developed a distinct operational history and mission profile.
Design and Specifications
All three Utopis-Labs share the same basic architecture as the original Utopis habitat cylinder, scaled down in length. Each features three radial stories, floor‑mounted portholes on the outer level, a central core with spoke elevators, and a small bridge module at the forward end. Independent fusion engines allow for repositioning within the Ares system, and each lab carries a full suite of scientific instruments tailored to its primary mission. The labs were designed to operate autonomously via delayed extention of Utara but remain in regular contact with Utopis Station.
Utopis-Lab 3
Primary Orbit: Oscar (moon-of oisín) – inner system.
Mission Focus: Mineral resource prospecting (titanium,-rare‑earth ores).
Utopis-Lab 3 gained particular significance during the events of Book 1 Prologue. Jenni Carisco was stationed aboard, conducting surveys of Oscar’s titanium‑rich regolith, essential for New Eden’s long‑term sustainability. The lab orbited the moon while Jenni’s husband remained on Utopis Station, 182 million kilometers away.
“Jenni Carisco pressed her hand against the cold observation window of Utopis-Lab 3 and looked out at the pocked surface of Oscar, feeling the distance in her bones as it rolled beneath her like a sleeping giant.”
During the prologue, Utopis-Lab 3 was struck by a solar flare , causing significant damage to external sensors and life‑support redundancies. Dr. Yuki Chen, the onboard medical officer, confirmed Jenni’s pregnancy in the immediate aftermath. The lab was forced to return to Utopis Station for an emergency refit , ending its first survey mission prematurely. After repairs, Lab 3 resumed operations around Oscar.
Known crew: Jenni Carisco (geologist), Dr. Yuki Chen (medical-officer).
Utopis-Lab 2
Primary Orbit: Osiris (moon-of ra).
Mission Focus: Particle physics / advanced alignment module research.
In Book 1, Chapter 2 , Utopis-Lab 2 encountered a critical emergency: the particle alignment module — a key experiment using Amerigo’s invention — showed dangerous fluctuations, putting seventeen crew members at risk. Dr. Troy dispatched Amerigo (the-inventor) to resolve the crisis.
Commanded by Captain Voss , a decisive and experienced female officer, Lab 2 faced an even graver situation when Amerigo’s daughter, Celectra, went missing on Ares. Captain Voss made the extraordinary decision to redline the lab’s engines , performing a high‑risk, high‑speed burn to return to Ares as quickly as possible. This maneuver allowed Amerigo to reach the surface and begin the search for his daughter.
Notable personnel: Captain Voss (commanding-officer), Amerigo (temporary-specialist), seventeen other crew members.
Utopis-Lab 1
Primary Orbit: Amaterasu (distant,-outer system).
Mission Focus: Long‑term astrophysical observation / later redesignated as exile station.
Utopis-Lab 1 operates in the remotest part of the Ares system, orbiting the icy moon Amaterasu. Originally tasked with deep‑space monitoring and cosmic background studies, the lab later gained a darker reputation as a place of permanent exile.
In Book 2, Chapter 19 , Mr. Kret — a disgraced physician obsessed with consciousness transfer — was sentenced by colonial authorities to permanent exile aboard Utopis-Lab 1. The terms were brutal:
- Revocation of his medical license (permanent).
- No contact with any Galinstanian populations.
- No research privileges involving consciousness, sapient subjects, or any work that might enable continuation of his obsession.
- Mandatory psychiatric treatment for unresolved grief and obsessive ideation.
- Immediate recycling without appeal if terms are violated.
Lab 1 thus became both a remote research station and a penal colony of one, a silent outpost at the edge of human‑occupied space.
Relationship with Utopis Station and New Eden
All three labs remain in regular communication with Utopis Station (the-main cylinder in geostationary orbit above ares) and the surface colony of New Eden. AI Utara coordinates logistics, research data, and emergency responses. The labs return to Utopis Station periodically for major refits, crew rotations, or, as in Lab 3’s case, post‑damage repairs. Their independence allows the colony to maintain a dispersed presence across the Ares system, reducing vulnerability and expanding scientific reach.
Cultural and Narrative Significance
The three Utopis‑Labs serve as narrative anchors across the book series. Lab 3 symbolizes personal sacrifice and the cost of exploration (jenni’s-pregnancy, the solar flare). Lab 2 represents desperate heroism and maternal command (captain-voss redlining engines to save a child). Lab 1 embodies exile, punishment, and the dark side of utopian ideals (kret’s-sentence). Though identical in steel and circuitry, each lab has acquired its own legend.
