Overview

Duška Santoso Carisco is a resonance designer and community arts coordinator born in New Eden during the colony’s early stabilization period. Growing up alongside the “integration generation,” she developed a keen sensitivity to the cultural and technological shifts occurring on Ares. Unlike many peers who focused purely on engineering or science, Duška gravitated toward the arts, exploring how visual and acoustic design could facilitate human–Galinstanian communication.

She married Alexander “Xan” Carisco in 2254, solidifying a union between two of the colony’s foundational families. Their son, Oxion, was born in 2255. Duška continues to work closely with the University Outreach Program, often collaborating with Galinstanian partners like Lyric to design spaces that accommodate both human and non-human sensory needs.

Physical Description

Duška has a warm, approachable presence with expressive eyes that seem to listen as much as they observe. She favors practical, artistic attire—soft fabrics in earth tones, often accented with subtle bismuth-thread embroidery that catches the light. Her hair is usually worn in a loose, functional style, and she moves with the quiet confidence of someone comfortable in both human and Galinstanian spaces.

Personality & Skills

Duška is defined by:

  • artistic perception and intuitive design sense
  • calming, grounded presence
  • collaborative spirit and team-oriented mindset
  • empathetic communication across cultural boundaries
  • protective instinct for family and community

Her strengths include:

  • resonance flow design (minimizing-acoustic interference for galinstanian communication)
  • community arts coordination and event planning
  • bridging technical and human-centered perspectives
  • working with Galinstanian partners on shared-space design

Her weaknesses include:

  • occasional reluctance to assert herself in high-stakes technical debates
  • tendency to prioritize harmony over necessary conflict
  • taking on too much emotional labor for the community

Relationships

  • Alexander “Xan” Carisco — husband; complementary partnership where he handles technical/observational data and she interprets human/cultural impact
  • Oxion “Oxi” Carisco — son (born-july 31, 2255); Duška nurtures his unusual comfort around Galinstanians
  • Amerigo & Zoë Carisco — parents-in-law; warm relationship with Zoë (psychological-insights), respect for Amerigo’s scientific rigor
  • Celectra Carisco-Bowers — sister-in-law; trusted confidante on community integration matters
  • Lyric & the Northern Cluster — Galinstanian collaborators; Duška’s resonance design work has earned their trust
  • Kowan, Sofia, Emma/Ethan, Hiro, Zuri — childhood cohort; frequent collaborators on university outreach and community projects

Story Overview (non-spoiler)

Duška’s arc is about finding her voice as a cultural architect—someone who shapes the spaces where humans and Galinstanians meet, not through technology alone, but through thoughtful design that honors both species’ sensory needs. She represents the generation that grows up with integration as normal, and her work helps ensure that normalcy is sustainable, beautiful, and inclusive.

Book 2 — Childhood in the Integration Era

At five years old, Duška is part of the earliest generation to grow up with Galinstanians as neighbors, not novelties. She attends Xan’s 6th birthday party in the cave where she bonds with Lyric by naming them. She shows early interest in art and sound, often drawing the shimmering forms of Galinstanians she sees in the colony. While not a central character in Book 2, she appears in background scenes at community events, quietly observing the bridges being built—both literal and cultural—between species.

Book 3 — Adolescence & Artistic Awakening

At twelve, Duška begins formal training in acoustic design and visual arts. She meets Xan Carisco through shared interests in colony history and astronomy; their friendship deepens as they collaborate on school projects exploring human–Galinstanian communication. Duška starts experimenting with “resonance flow” concepts—designing spaces that minimize acoustic interference for Galinstanian pulses. By the end of Book 3, she and Xan are a couple, and Duška is beginning to see herself as a cultural architect, not just an artist.

Book 4 — Marriage, Motherhood & the Four Rivers

Duška marries Xan in 2254. In early 2255, while pregnant with their son Oxion, she participates in the Four Rivers Festival, helping design acoustic spaces that allow Galinstanians and humans to share the celebration comfortably. Her resonance design work earns recognition from both human engineers and Galinstanian elders. After Oxion’s birth (july-31, 2255), Duška balances motherhood with her growing role in community arts coordination. She begins collaborating more formally with Lyric and the Northern Cluster, designing workshop spaces that accommodate both species’ sensory needs.

Book 5 — The Resonant Echo & Next-Generation Leadership

At twenty-seven, Duška is an established resonance designer and university outreach liaison. During the Resonant Echo rescue at the Samaya Gallery, she plays a critical support role: managing resonance perimeters, providing artistic perception of flow during acoustic negotiations, and helping coordinate the hybrid human–Galinstanian response. Her work with Lyric and the Northern Cluster proves invaluable in stabilizing the rescued collective. Later, at the Utopis education conference, Duška helps manage tech demos showcasing the next generation of integration. Her arc culminates in her becoming a mentor to younger artists and designers, ensuring that the principles of inclusive, resonance-aware design become standard practice across the colony.
