Overview

Amerigo Carisco is New Eden’s Chief Scientist, a founding member of the colony, and one of the most influential scientific minds on Ares. Brilliant, intense, and deeply principled, he becomes both the architect of humanity’s scientific future and the emotional core of the Carisco family. His relationship with Celectra — first as a father terrified for his daughter’s survival, later as a collaborator in shaping interspecies communication — defines much of the colony’s early history.

Amerigo’s arc spans five books, charting his evolution from a driven researcher to a statesman whose work shapes the long-term coexistence of humans and Galinstanians.

Physical Description

Amerigo is tall, sharp-featured, and expressive, with dark hair that grays early at the temples. His posture is upright and purposeful, and his eyes carry the intensity of someone who thinks in equations even while making breakfast. He has a habit of pacing when deep in thought and rubbing the bridge of his nose when frustrated.

Personality & Skills

Amerigo is defined by:

  • relentless curiosity
  • a fierce protective instinct toward his family
  • a tendency to overwork himself
  • a dry, understated sense of humor
  • a moral compass that rarely wavers

His scientific strengths include:

  • xenobiology
  • EM-field modeling
  • neural-interface theory
  • systems engineering
  • crisis-driven innovation

His personal strengths include:

  • loyalty
  • emotional resilience
  • the ability to admit when he’s wrong (eventually)
  • the ability to balance logic with compassion

Relationships

  • Zoë Carisco — wife, emotional equal, grounding force
  • Celectra Carisco — daughter, scientific collaborator, source of pride and fear
  • Xan Carisco — son, budding innovator
  • Jenni Jo & Xara Zo — granddaughters he adores
  • Dr. Alexander Cruiz — best friend, co-strategist, trusted advisor
  • Jaxon Bowers — mentee, later son-in-law figure
  • Stan, Chime, Logic — Galinstanians he learns to understand through Celectra’s communion

Story Overview (non-spoiler)

Amerigo’s journey is one of responsibility, discovery, and the emotional cost of raising a child who becomes essential to the survival of two species. His scientific leadership shapes the colony’s future, while his personal arc explores the tension between protecting Celectra and empowering her to define her own path.

Book 1 — The Scientist and the Father

Amerigo struggles to balance his scientific responsibilities, fatherhood, and coming to terms with Celectra’s dual-body existence. He becomes one of the first humans to understand the Galinstanian EM network through Celectra’s communion. Amerigo relocates from the space station, Utopis to New Eden with Celectra for her sake and to follow is romanic interest.

Book 2 — The Northern Territory

Amerigo oversees the scientific aspects of the Northern Territory expedition and confronts the ethical fallout of Kret’s past experiments. He supports Celectra through the trauma of the mission and begins laying the groundwork for the Listener Corps. His relationship with Alex deepens as they navigate the colony’s growing dependence on Celectra.

Book 3 — The Communion Interface

With Dr.Troy’s retirement, Amerigo becomes Chief Scientist and a councilman, marking the beginning of his political and scientific leadership. As Chief Scientist, Amerigo leads the development of the Communion Interface — technology meant to replicate Celectra’s natural EM abilities. He pushes the team hard, driven by the need to protect Celectra as her natural range declines during pregnancy. His stance on using Kret’s research is pragmatic but morally grounded: “Science doesn’t have morality. Scientists do.” His relationship with Jaxon becomes more complex as Jaxon becomes both his subordinate and Celectra’s partner.

Book 4 — The Four Rivers Resonance

Amerigo plays a central role in analyzing the resonance anomalies across the Four Rivers settlements. He helps identify the geometric pattern linking the disturbances and works with engineers and Galinstanians to stabilize the network. His scientific leadership is crucial to understanding the ancient bismuth anchors beneath Ares. As a grandfather, he becomes a softer, more reflective presence in the Carisco home.

Book 5 — Stewardship and the Next Generation

In his late sixties, Amerigo becomes a senior advisor to the Resonance Stewardship Program. He mentors younger scientists, including members of Xan’s generation, and helps refine long-term monitoring systems for the planetary network. His arc centers on legacy — ensuring that the scientific foundations he built will support Ares long after he is gone. He watches with pride as Jenni, Xara, and Ripple begin shaping the future he once feared Celectra would have to carry alone.
